Your child's safety and privacy are at the heart of everything we do at Kiddo AI. This Children's Privacy Policy explains, in clear and simple terms, exactly what information we collect about children, how we use it, who can access it, and what rights you have as a parent or guardian.

This document is a companion to our general Privacy Policy. It focuses specifically on how we handle data related to children ages 2–12 and is written to comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) in the United States and GDPR Article 8 in the European Union.

The most important thing to know: Children never create accounts, enter data, or interact with Kiddo AI independently. Every piece of information about your child is entered, managed, and controlled exclusively by you — the parent or guardian.

1. How Kiddo AI Works for Children

Kiddo AI is an AI-powered personalized storybook platform. Here's how it works:

1. You (the parent or guardian) create a profile for your child.
2. Our AI uses that profile — your child's name, age, interests, and other details you provide — to generate unique stories where your child is the main character.
3. Stories include personalized text, illustrations, and audio narration, all tailored to your child.

Your child never needs to type, sign in, or provide any information. You control everything.

2. What Information We Collect About Children

All of the data below is provided by you, the parent or guardian — never by the child directly.

2.1 Required Profile Data

You choose whether to provide any of the following. The more you share, the more personalized the stories become — but none of it is required.

2.3 AI-Generated Data (From Your Child's Photo)

When you upload your child's photo, our AI processes it to create:

• A visual profile — a set of visual characteristics (e.g., "brown hair," "glasses," "blue eyes") and a color palette. This visual profile drives how your child's character appears in all story illustrations.
• An AI-generated avatar — a stylized illustration of your child, used as their profile image and in stories.

How this works: The AI analyzes the photo to extract visual characteristics, then uses those characteristics — not the original photo — to generate illustrations. The original photo is stored securely on our servers (AWS S3) and is not shared with illustration providers.

3. How We Use Your Child's Information

We use your child's data for three purposes — and only these three purposes:

3.1 Story Personalization (Primary Purpose)

This is the core reason Kiddo AI exists:

• Your child's name becomes the main character's name.
• Your child's age (calculated from birth date) determines vocabulary complexity, sentence length, and theme maturity.
• Your child's gender determines character pronouns and representation.
• Your child's reading level controls word count, sentence structure, and narrative complexity.
• Your child's interests guide story topic selection — a child who loves dinosaurs gets dinosaur adventures.
• Your child's dream jobs and skills customize what the character does in stories.
• Your child's visual profile (derived from their photo) determines how the character looks in every illustration.

3.2 Content Safety (Critical Purpose)

Some of your child's data is used specifically to protect them:

• Fears are used to exclude content. If your child is afraid of storms, the AI will not include storm scenes.
• Sensitivities and special needs trigger additional safety filtering to ensure stories avoid potentially distressing themes.
• Every story undergoes a multi-provider AI safety review across 10 categories: Age Appropriateness, Emotional Safety, Psychological Accuracy, Moral Value Clarity, Violence/Conflict Level, False Promise Detection, Diversity/Inclusion, Readability/Clarity, Educational Value, and Cultural Sensitivity.

3.3 Reading Analytics (For Parents)

• Activity data powers the Reading Analytics dashboard so you can monitor your child's reading habits.
• Reading streaks and milestones motivate continued reading through gentle gamification.

4. How We Do NOT Use Your Child's Information

We believe in being completely transparent — not just about what we do, but about what we never do:

• We never use your child's data for advertising or marketing.
• We never share your child's data with advertisers, ad networks, or data brokers.
• We never sell your child's data to anyone, for any reason.
• We never use your child's data for behavioral profiling or targeted content beyond story personalization.
• We never allow children to create accounts, post content, or interact with other users.
• We never collect data directly from children — everything comes from you.
• We never use your child's photo for any purpose other than generating their story character avatar.
• We have no advertising SDKs, ad networks, or behavioral tracking tools in the app. Firebase Analytics is explicitly disabled.

5. Third-Party Services That Process Children's Data

To create personalized stories, certain children's data is processed by third-party services. Here is exactly what is shared with whom, and why:

• Advertising networks — none used
• Analytics services — none used (Firebase Analytics is disabled)
• Data brokers — none used
• Social media platforms — none used
• Any third party not listed in the table above

6. Parental Consent

6.1 When Consent Is Required

Before you can create your first child profile, Kiddo AI requires you to provide active, verifiable consent. This involves:

1. Reading this Children's Privacy Policy.
2. Checking a consent checkbox confirming: "I am this child's parent or legal guardian. I have read and agree to the Children's Privacy Policy regarding the collection and use of my child's personal information."
3. Tapping a confirmation button.

6.2 What Your Consent Covers

By providing consent, you authorize Kiddo AI to:

• Collect the child profile data described in Section 2 (name, birth date, gender, reading level, and any optional data you choose to provide).
• Process your child's photo (if you choose to upload one) to generate an AI avatar and visual profile.
• Use this data to generate personalized AI stories, illustrations, and audio narration.
• Track reading and listening activity for parental analytics.
• Store this data securely on our servers and with the third-party providers listed in Section 5.

6.3 Consent Is One-Time Per Account

Once you consent for your first child, adding additional children to your account does not require a separate consent. You may withdraw consent at any time (see Section 7).

6.4 Who Can Provide Consent

Only authenticated users — signed in through Google or Apple — can create child profiles. By using the app and creating a child profile, you confirm that you are the child's parent, legal guardian, or authorized caregiver.

7. Your Rights as a Parent

You have full control over your child's data. Here are your rights and how to exercise them:

7.1 Right to Review

You can view all data we hold about your child at any time:

• All profile data (name, birth date, interests, fears, etc.) is visible on the child's profile screen in the app.
• All stories created for your child are available in the app.
• Reading and listening activity history is available in the Reading Analytics section.
• Your child's AI-generated visual profile and avatar are visible on their profile.

7.2 Right to Edit

You can modify any of your child's profile data at any time through the app — name, birth date, interests, fears, reading level, photo, and all other fields. Changes take effect immediately in future story generation.

7.3 Right to Delete

You can delete your child's profile at any time through the app. Here is what happens when you do:

• The child's profile record is removed from our database.
• The profile photo reference is removed.
• Stories previously created for that child are retained (they belong to your family account).
• Reading and listening activity logs are retained (for family analytics).
• Photos and avatars in cloud storage (AWS S3) may persist, as they are referenced by existing story illustrations.

To request complete deletion of all data — including stories, cloud-stored photos, and AI generation history — contact us at hello@kiddoai.net.

7.4 Right to Refuse Further Collection

You can limit data collection at any time:

• Stop using the app entirely.
• Delete your child's profile to prevent any further data collection for that child.
• Choose not to upload a photo (avatar generation is optional).
• Choose not to provide optional data (interests, fears, skills, etc.).

7.5 Right to Withdraw Consent

You can withdraw consent at any time by:

• Deleting all child profiles from your account through the app.
• Contacting hello@kiddoai.net to request account-wide consent withdrawal.

Upon consent withdrawal, no further children's data will be collected or processed.

8. Family Sharing and Children's Data

Kiddo AI supports family accounts where multiple caregivers share access:

• When the account Admin invites a family member (by email), that member gains access to all children's profiles, stories, and reading data within the family account.
• The Admin is responsible for deciding who has access to the family account and, by extension, to children's data.
• If a family member is removed by the Admin, they immediately lose access to all children's data.
• No one outside your family account can see your children's profile data, photos, or personal information — even if a story featuring your child is made public (only the story content is visible, not your child's profile).

Family roles and children's data access:

• Admin — Full control: can create, edit, and delete children's profiles, manage family members, and control all settings.
• Member — Can view children's profiles, create stories, read stories, and view analytics. Cannot manage family settings or other members.

9. How We Keep Your Child's Data Safe

We take the security of your child's data seriously:

• Encryption in transit: All data is transmitted over HTTPS.
• Secure cloud storage: Photos, avatars, and illustrations are stored on AWS S3.
• No password storage: We use OAuth 2.0 (Google and Apple sign-in), so no passwords are stored.
• Secure session tokens: Authentication tokens (JWT) are stored securely on your device.
• Content safety review: All AI-generated stories undergo multi-provider safety screening before being presented.
• No tracking or advertising: There are no advertising SDKs, behavioral trackers, or analytics tools in the app that process children's data.

While we take reasonable and appropriate measures to protect your child's information, no system can guarantee absolute security. We are committed to promptly notifying affected users in the event of any data breach involving children's data.

10. Data Retention

If you want everything deleted — including stories, photos, avatars, and AI history — please contact us at hello@kiddoai.net and we will process your request.

11. Age-Appropriate Content Safeguards

Kiddo AI employs multiple layers of protection to ensure every story is safe and appropriate for your child:

1. Age-based content adaptation — Story complexity, vocabulary, and themes automatically adjust based on your child's age (calculated from their birth date).
2. Reading level filtering — Story structure matches the reading proficiency level you select.
3. Fear and sensitivity avoidance — Content you flag as fears or sensitivities is actively excluded from stories.
4. AI safety screening — All user-provided text (such as custom story instructions) is checked for child safety before being processed.
5. Multi-provider pedagogical review — Every generated story is independently reviewed by multiple AI systems across 10 safety categories (listed in Section 3.2).
6. Human specialist review — Available as an additional oversight layer for stories that are made public.
7. Child Mode — A simplified reading interface where you can hide story text (picture-only mode for very young children), block page skipping, enable auto-advance, and set tap duration controls.

Despite these comprehensive safeguards, no automated content filtering system is perfect. We strongly encourage you to review stories, especially for younger children (ages 2–5).

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Children's Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do:

• We will notify you through the app.
• The "Last Updated" date at the top of this document will be revised.
• If we make material changes to how we collect, use, or share children's data, we will request renewed parental consent before those changes take effect.
